How it works

  • Pick a year and the tool lists that year's 24 solar terms (Start of Spring, Rain Water, Awakening of Insects, spring equinox, Pure Brightness, Grain Rain, Start of Summer … summer solstice … autumn equinox … winter solstice, Minor Cold, Major Cold) with their Gregorian dates, solar ecliptic longitude, and season.
  • The 24 solar terms divide the year each time the Sun's apparent ecliptic longitude advances 15 degrees along the ecliptic. The spring equinox is 0°, the summer solstice 90°, the autumn equinox 180°, and the winter solstice 270°.
  • When you choose a 'date to check', the tool determines which interval of the 24 solar terms that day belongs to (the current term and the next term) and displays it prominently.
  • Dates are given in Japan Standard Time (JST). Around the turn of the year, such as near Start of Spring, the terms of the adjacent years are also considered when determining the interval.
  • The dates in this tool are computed with an approximation of the solar ecliptic longitude, so they may differ by about ±1 day from official definitive values such as the ephemeris of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Please consult an official almanac when exact dates are required.
  • Supported years range from 1900 to 2100 CE.
