How it works
- Calories burned are estimated with the common simplified formula "METs x weight (kg) x time (hours) x 1.05". Because this formula does not subtract your resting metabolism, it gives figures slightly higher than the net energy used by the activity alone.
- METs (metabolic equivalents) express exercise intensity relative to rest (rest = 1). This tool treats both baseball/softball in general and pitching as roughly 5.0 METs, based on representative values from the Compendium of Physical Activities published by Japan's National Institute of Health and Nutrition.
- Enter the time you were actually moving. Games and practices include a lot of waiting and resting, so excluding that time gives a result closer to reality.
- For reference, the tool shows how many bowls of rice (about 234 kcal each) and how many grams of body fat (about 7.2 kcal/g) the calories burned correspond to. These are rough conversions meant only to aid understanding.
