How it works
- Average heights and weights are guides based on age-by-age averages (medians): ages 5-17 from Japan's MEXT "School Health Statistics Survey" and ages 1-4 from the MHLW "Infant Physical Development Survey".
- The "difference from average" is your child's entered height or weight minus the average for the same age and sex. A positive value means larger than average, a negative value means smaller than average.
- Body balance is assessed with the Kaup index (weight in g ÷ height in cm² × 10) for ages 1-5, and the Rohrer index (weight in kg ÷ height in cm³ × 10⁷) for ages 6-17. Both indexes look at the balance between height and weight.
- Rohrer index guide: under 100 = very thin / 100-115 = slightly thin / 115-145 = standard / 145-160 = slightly heavy / 160 and over = overweight. The Kaup index is roughly 15-18 for standard (thresholds vary slightly with age).
- There is large individual variation in height and weight, and every child grows at their own pace, so averages are only a guide. If you have any concerns about your child's growth, refer to the growth curves in the Maternal and Child Health Handbook or consult your pediatrician.
