How it works
- The predicted height (average) is calculated with the target-height (mid-parental) method: for boys, (sum of both parents' heights + 13) ÷ 2; for girls, (sum of both parents' heights − 13) ÷ 2.
- The "probability of reaching each height" is calculated from a normal distribution (bell curve) centered on this average. The target range of the mid-parental method (±9 cm for boys, ±8 cm for girls) is treated as the range that contains about 95% of cases (±2 standard deviations), so the standard deviation is set to half of that.
- Probabilities are shown for each 5 cm band as the share of cases whose adult height falls within that band. Adding up all the bands comes to roughly 100%.
- This is a rough statistical guide based only on the parents' heights (genetics). Actual height varies greatly with environment, such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, and the timing of puberty.
