How it works
- The age- and sex-specific average scores shown here are benchmarks based on representative values from the Japan Sports Agency's 'Survey of Physical Fitness and Athletic Ability (New Physical Fitness Test)'. Actual averages vary by grade, year, and region, so refer to the official statistics for the latest, accurate figures.
- The target age range is 6-19 (in full years). As reference trends, boys go from 19 reps at age 6 to a peak of 87 reps at 13 and 96 reps at 17, while girls go from 15 reps at 6 to 61 reps at 14 and 52 reps at 17.
- To estimate maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max), a simple approximation of 'laps × 0.05 + 30 (ml/kg/min)' is used. This is a reference value that includes error and may differ from actual VO₂max.
- The rating guide treats a ratio to the average below 0.85 as 'somewhat low', 0.85 to under 1.1 as 'average', 1.1 to under 1.3 as 'somewhat high', and 1.3 or more as 'very high'.
- The 20 m shuttle run measures aerobic (whole-body) endurance: you run back and forth over a 20 m section in time with beeps that get progressively shorter. The more turns you complete, the higher your endurance.
- The displayed figures are reference values only. Individual differences in fitness are large, so consult your school's PE teacher or a specialist for interpretation of results and exercise guidance.
