How it works
- The repeated side-step (side-step test) measures how many lines you touch by side-stepping for 20 seconds across three parallel lines drawn on the floor 100 cm apart. It is measured using the method defined in Japan's MEXT "New Physical Fitness Test Guidelines".
- Stand straddling the center line, then repeatedly side-step in the order right line โ center โ left line โ center. The total number of lines touched (including the center line you straddle) is your score.
- The averages shown are approximate guides based on representative values by age and sex from the Japan Sports Agency's "Survey on Physical Strength and Athletic Ability (New Physical Fitness Test)". Actual averages vary by grade, year, and region, so check the official statistics for the most recent and accurate figures.
- The repeated side-step is regarded mainly as a test of agility. It evaluates the ability to change direction quickly in a short time.
- As a rule in the New Physical Fitness Test, the event is performed twice and the better record is used. Warm up thoroughly and use non-slip shoes and flooring.
- The figures shown are only a guide. If you are unwell or have any exercise restrictions, consult a doctor or your school teacher before taking the test.
