How it works

  • The sit-and-reach is a New Physical Fitness Test measurement: sit with your back and buttocks against a wall and both legs extended, place both hands on the measuring box in the starting posture, then bend your upper body forward and measure the distance (cm) the box slides forward.
  • The averages in this tool are estimates based on the age- and sex-specific representative values for the sit-and-reach from Japan Sports Agency's 'Survey of Physical Fitness and Athletic Ability (New Physical Fitness Test).' Because the figures vary by survey year and aggregation method, please check the official statistics for the latest and accurate values.
  • Guide to the representative values shown (ages 6-19): for example, at age 10 boys 34.5 cm and girls 38.5 cm; at age 13 boys 45.0 cm and girls 47.0 cm; at age 17 boys 50.0 cm and girls 47.5 cm. Girls tend to reach their peak at an earlier age than boys.
  • The ratio to the average is calculated as 'your child's record รท the average.' A value of 1.0 (100%) is on par with the average, and a value above 1.0 indicates higher flexibility than average.
  • Flexibility is a fitness component that improves relatively easily with continued stretching, but the displayed values are only reference guides. Please consult a doctor or specialist about physical condition and exercise habits.
