How it works

  • This tool is an estimate based on Japan's 10% standard rate and 8% reduced rate as of FY2024 (Reiwa 6). Check the latest rates and rules with official sources such as the National Tax Agency.
  • For each rate category, consumption tax is found as "tax-excluded subtotal × rate", rounded within each category, and then summed (consumption tax = 10% portion + 8% portion).
  • The tax-included total is the sum of the 10% items' tax-included amount (excl. tax + tax) and the 8% items' tax-included amount.
  • Rounding can be chosen as round down, round half up, or round up, applied to the consumption tax of each rate category. In an actual business invoice, the rule is to round once per rate on each qualified invoice.
  • The 8% reduced rate applies to food and drink excluding alcohol and dining out, and to subscription newspapers, while alcohol, dining out, and other goods and services are subject to the 10% standard rate. Category classification depends on the nature of the transaction.
  • The results of this tool are only a guide and may differ from the actual tax amount or invoice figures. Confirm official amounts with a tax accountant or official sources.
