How it works

  • The volume equals the base area times the height. The base is a circle of radius r, so the base area is πr² and multiplying by the height h gives volume = πr²h.
  • The lateral (side) area is 2πrh. Unrolling the side of the cylinder gives a rectangle whose width is the base circumference 2πr and whose height is h.
  • The total surface area is the lateral area plus the two circular ends, 2πrh + 2πr² = 2πr(r + h).
  • Enter the radius and height in the same unit. If lengths are in centimeters, the volume is in cubic centimeters and the surface area in square centimeters.
  • The calculation uses approximately 3.14159 for pi.

Frequently asked questions

How is the volume of a cylinder calculated?
Multiply the base area by the height. The base is a circle of radius r, so the base area is πr², giving volume = πr²h. We use π ≈ 3.14159.
How does a cylinder's volume compare to a cone with the same radius and height?
A cylinder holds πr²h, while a cone with the same radius and height holds only one third of that. In other words, exactly three such cones fit inside the cylinder.
What is the difference between lateral area and total surface area?
The lateral area is the rectangle you get by unrolling the side, 2πrh, and the total surface area adds the two circular ends: 2πrh + 2πr² = 2πr(r+h).
