How it works

  • Estimated GFR (eGFR) is an indicator that estimates how well the kidneys filter waste, based on the serum creatinine value from a blood test together with your age and sex. It is expressed in mL/min/1.73m² (per 1.73m² of body surface area).
  • The calculation uses the estimating formula for Japanese adults from the Japanese Society of Nephrology: eGFR = 194 × creatinine^(−1.094) × age^(−0.287), multiplied by an additional 0.739 for women.
  • The result is shown as a guide to the GFR category based on the KDIGO classification and the Japanese Society of Nephrology CKD guidelines (G1: 90 and above, G2: 60–89, G3a: 45–59, G3b: 30–44, G4: 15–29, G5: below 15).
  • This estimating formula is intended for adults aged 18 and over. It may diverge from actual kidney function in children, people with extreme body size or muscle mass, or when kidney function is changing rapidly.
  • The GFR category should be assessed together with the presence of kidney damage (such as proteinuria); eGFR alone does not confirm whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) is present. Please use it only as a reference for interpreting your results.
