How it works
- Your FIRE date is found by starting from your current savings and growing it each month at the expected annual return (split into a monthly rate), adding your monthly contribution at each month-end and your bonus contribution every 6 months, then finding the first month your balance reaches the FIRE number. That month count from today is converted into a "Month Year" date and a "years and months to go" countdown.
- The FIRE number is "monthly spending ร 12 (annual spending) รท withdrawal rate." At a 4% withdrawal rate (the 4% rule) that is 25ร your annual spending. You can pick 4%, 3.5%, 3%, or any custom rate. The monthly withdrawal equals the monthly spending you entered.
- Milestone dates use the same accumulation model to find the first month you reach each amount, showing only milestones below your FIRE number as points along the way.
- Your age at FIRE is your current age plus the whole years until you reach it. Age is optional โ leave it blank to skip it.
- The rank (๐ข all-star / ๐ก on track / ๐ด rethink) is a rough label based on years to FIRE (within 15 / within 25 / beyond). The "another ยฅ10,000/month" figure is the difference in months to FIRE when you add ยฅ10,000 to your monthly contribution.
- The age-group comparison contrasts your current savings with the average financial assets of single-person households in your age band, from the Central Council for Financial Services Information's "Public Opinion Survey on Household Financial Behavior (2024)" (mean, including households with no financial assets). It is a reference figure only.
- This is a simplified estimate that assumes a constant rate of return. Real returns vary and you can lose money; taxes, fees, inflation, pensions, and tax-advantaged-account limits are not modeled. Make investment and retirement decisions at your own risk and consult a professional when needed.
