How it works
- This tool estimates how many years it takes a hybrid car's fuel savings to recover its higher purchase price compared with a gasoline car.
- Annual fuel cost is calculated as annual distance ÷ fuel economy (km/L) × fuel price, computed separately for the gasoline car and the hybrid.
- Annual fuel savings = gasoline car's annual fuel cost − hybrid's annual fuel cost. Payback time = price gap ÷ annual fuel savings.
- If the hybrid's fuel economy is no better than the gasoline car's, the savings are zero or negative, so the price gap can't be recovered and the result is shown as not recoverable.
- In reality hybrids also differ in taxes, incentives, resale value, and battery replacement costs, so fuel savings alone don't tell the whole story. This is a fuel-cost-only comparison.
- Fuel prices, mileage, and fuel economy vary by country and conditions, so treat the result as a rough estimate.
