How it works
- For public transport (train, bus, etc.), the reasonable monthly fare is tax-free up to a maximum of ¥150,000 per month. Under 'Train/Bus', the tool treats up to ¥150,000 of the allowance as tax-free and the excess as taxable.
- For car or bicycle commuters, the monthly tax-free limit depends on the one-way distance: under 2 km = fully taxable (¥0); 2 km–under 10 km = ¥4,200; 10–under 15 km = ¥7,100; 15–under 25 km = ¥12,900; 25–under 35 km = ¥18,700; 35–under 45 km = ¥24,400; 45–under 55 km = ¥28,000; 55 km or more = ¥31,600.
- For 'Both', the tax-free limit is the sum of the distance-based amount and the monthly public-transport fare, capped at ¥150,000 per month.
- Tax-free amount = min(allowance, tax-free limit); taxable amount = max(allowance − tax-free limit, 0). If the allowance is within the limit, the whole amount is tax-free.
- Any amount paid above the tax-free limit is treated as salary and is subject to income tax and resident tax. (Social insurance premiums are calculated differently, generally including the commuting allowance in remuneration even the tax-free part.)
- This tool is an estimate based on the general tax-free limits published by Japan's National Tax Agency. Distance classification and actual taxable/non-taxable treatment may vary by your employer's rules and individual circumstances, so confirm exact figures with your payroll department, the tax office, or a tax accountant.
