Vital Capacity (Predicted) Calculator
Estimate predicted vital capacity from sex, age, and height with the Baldwin equation. Add a measured value to get % vital capacity.
Input
Estimates your predicted vital capacity from sex, age, and height using the Baldwin equation. This tool is a guide only and is not a diagnosis.

Predicted vital capacity (Baldwin equation)
4,126ml
About 4.13 L
Predicted
4.13 L
Formula
(27.63 − 0.112 × 30) × 170
* % vital capacity = measured ÷ predicted × 100. A value of 80% or higher is generally considered within the reference range.
How it works
- Predicted vital capacity is calculated with the Baldwin equation. Male = (27.63 − 0.112 × age) × height in cm (mL); Female = (21.78 − 0.101 × age) × height in cm (mL).
- Enter your sex, age, and height to display the predicted vital capacity (mL/L). The predicted value decreases as age increases.
- Enter a measured vital capacity to calculate % vital capacity (measured ÷ predicted × 100). A value of 80% or higher is generally taken as the reference; a lower value may suggest a restrictive ventilatory impairment.
- The predicted value is a statistical estimate, so it can differ from the measured value depending on body build and measurement conditions.
- Vital capacity is just one indicator of health. Respiratory function is assessed together with other tests, such as the FEV1 ratio.
- This tool provides estimates based on general formulas and is not a diagnosis or medical advice. Always consult a doctor for health-related decisions.
