Each diagnostic item (waist is required; meeting 2 or more of the 3 additional risks qualifies)
| Item | Criterion | Judgement |
|---|---|---|
| Waist (required) | Male 85 cm or more | Met |
| Blood pressure | Systolic ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 85 mmHg | Met |

How it works
- How it is judged (Japan's diagnostic criteria, the 2005 joint criteria of 8 medical societies): a waist circumference of at least 85 cm for men and 90 cm for women is a required condition. Once this is met, meeting 2 or more of the 3 additional risk factors is judged as metabolic syndrome, while meeting 1 is judged as borderline (pre-metabolic syndrome).
- The 3 additional risk factors: (1) blood pressure = systolic ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 85 mmHg, (2) fasting blood glucose ≥ 110 mg/dL, (3) lipids = triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL or HDL cholesterol < 40 mg/dL. Meeting either condition within a factor makes that factor apply.
- Waist circumference is used as a proxy for visceral fat area (roughly equivalent to 100 cm²) and is typically measured at the level of the navel while gently exhaling. If the waist is below the threshold, the criteria classify you as not applicable even when other figures are high.
- This tool applies the criteria above to your input values for an automatic judgement, and is meant as a quick way to self-check your health-checkup results. In an actual diagnosis, measurement conditions and additional tests may be taken into account.
- Because the numerical thresholds may change, please check the criteria published by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare or the relevant medical societies, as well as guidance from medical institutions, for the latest and most accurate information.
- The results of this tool are only a guide and do not constitute a medical act such as diagnosis or treatment. Regardless of the result, always consult a professional such as a physician or public health nurse about evaluating your health and whether you should seek medical care.
