Mizuwari ABV Calculator
Find the alcohol percentage in your glass from the base spirit's strength and volume plus the water or ice added. Also shows pure alcohol, total volume, and spirit ratio.
Input
Calculate the alcohol percentage in your glass from the strength and volume of the base spirit (whisky, shochu, etc.) plus the water or ice you add. As the ice melts, the actual ABV drops even further.

How it works
- The final alcohol percentage is calculated as "base ABV (%) × spirit volume (ml) ÷ (spirit volume + water/ice volume)". The same formula applies to any non-alcoholic mixer such as water, hot water, or soda.
- Pure alcohol (g) is calculated as "spirit volume (ml) × ABV (%) ÷ 100 × 0.8". The 0.8 is the density of ethanol, and the amount of pure alcohol stays the same no matter how much water you add.
- When you use ice, the ice melts in the glass and adds water over time, so by the time you finish drinking the actual ABV tends to be lower than the calculated value. The result is only a rough estimate for the moment the drink is made.
- The spirit ratio is "spirit volume ÷ total volume × 100", a handy reference for the strength of a drink on the rocks or watered down. A common mizuwari uses roughly 1 part spirit to 2–2.5 parts water.
- About 20g of pure alcohol per day is often cited as the guideline for "moderate, responsible drinking". Use the result as a reference to avoid overdoing it, and enjoy within limits that suit your condition and constitution.
- These figures are estimates based on a standard formula and are not medical advice or a health diagnosis. Drink in moderation. Drinking under the legal age and drunk driving are prohibited by law, and the effects of alcohol vary greatly from person to person.
