How it works
- The total volume is split between spirit and water (including ice and mixers) according to the chosen ratio. For example, making 300 ml at 1:2 gives 100 ml of spirit and 200 ml of water.
- The resulting ABV is calculated as 'spirit ABV x spirit volume / total volume'. For a given ratio, the resulting ABV stays the same no matter the total volume.
- Pure alcohol per glass is calculated as 'total volume (ml) x resulting ABV (%) / 100 x 0.8 (specific gravity of alcohol)'.
- As a rough guide: 1:1 is strong, 1:2 is the easy-drinking standard, and 1:2.5 to 1:3 are light and crisp. Choose based on your taste and the occasion.
- As ice melts, the actual drink becomes weaker than shown. Because taste varies with the amount of mixer and how much the ice melts, treat these figures as estimates only.
