How it works

  • It reverse-calculates the gross monthly salary (total pay) before social insurance (health, pension, employment, and optional long-term care insurance) and income tax plus resident tax, from the monthly take-home pay you enter. This is an approximation for company employees in Japan (Kyokai Kenpo).
  • It uses the same gross → take-home model as our "Monthly Net Salary" tool and searches, to the yen, for the smallest gross whose take-home is at least your entered amount. Due to rounding, the take-home at the found gross may slightly exceed your input.
  • Social insurance treats the monthly salary as the standard monthly remuneration: health insurance about 5.0%, pension 9.15%, and employment insurance 0.6% (employee share), with caps on health insurance and pension. Turning on long-term care insurance adds about 0.8% for ages 40–64.
  • Income tax and resident tax assume the same salary for 12 months (no bonus): the annualized salary is reduced by the employment income deduction, basic deduction, and social insurance deduction to find the yearly tax, then divided by 12. Resident tax is a 10% income levy plus a flat 5,000 yen per-capita levy.
  • Use "other income deductions" for yearly deductions such as spousal, dependent, or life-insurance deductions. Leave it at 0 to apply only the basic deduction.
  • Results are estimates only. Your actual gross and take-home depend on your residence, age, dependents, deductions, bonuses, and company rules. Check your payslip or a tax office for exact figures.
