How it works

  • The monthly rate is the annual rate (%) divided by 100 and by 12, and the number of contributions is years ร— 12, assuming monthly compounding with end-of-month contributions (an ordinary annuity).
  • The future value is: starting amount ร— (1 + monthly rate)^n + monthly contribution ร— {(1 + monthly rate)^n โˆ’ 1} รท monthly rate. The calculator numerically solves (by bisection) for the annual rate that makes this equal your target.
  • If your total contributions (starting amount plus monthly deposits) alone reach the target, the required return is shown as 0% โ€” no investment growth is needed.
  • If even a 100% annual return would not reach the target, the goal is flagged as unrealistic; consider a larger contribution, a longer period, or a lower target.
  • Taxes, fees, and fluctuating returns are not considered. In a taxable account, investment gains are taxed, so the return you actually need is higher than this result.
  • Results are rough estimates and do not guarantee that any investment will deliver the displayed return. In general, a higher required return means taking more risk. Make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
