How it works
- Calories are estimated with the common simplified formula "METs x weight (kg) x exercise time (hours) x 1.05". It is an estimate of total energy expenditure, including the resting metabolic component.
- METs express how many times more intense an activity is than rest. This tool offers three levels - light 3.5, moderate 7.0, and hard 12.0 - and the applied METs change with the level you choose.
- The METs values are estimates based on representative figures from the National Institute of Health and Nutrition's revised compendium of physical activities. Actual intensity varies with your stroke, pace, and the type of boat.
- For reference, the result is shown as the number of bowls of rice (about 234 kcal each) and the grams of body fat (about 7.2 kcal per gram) it corresponds to. These are illustrative estimates, not exact intake or storage values.
- Actual calories burned vary by weight, body composition, fitness, environment such as water temperature and wind, and form. Treat the displayed figures as a reference only.
- Enter the time you were actually rowing. If you take many breaks, subtracting that time gives a more realistic estimate.
