Smoking Life Expectancy Calculator
Estimate how much time smoking may cost you from your cigarettes per day and years smoking, using the rough estimate of about 12 minutes lost per cigarette. Add cigarettes and price per pack to estimate lifetime cigarette spending too. For reference only.
Input
Based on the statistical estimate that each cigarette shortens life by about 12 minutes, this tool estimates how much time may be lost. Treat the result as a rough, for-fun figure only.
Cost estimate (optional)
Result
Estimated time lost
about 3.3 yrs
(about 1,217 days = about 1,752,000 min)
Lifetime cigarettes
146,000 cigs
Estimated years lost
about 3.3 yrs
Lifetime cigarette cost
about 4,380,000
This figure simply multiplies the statistical estimate that each cigarette shortens life by about 12 minutes, and does not predict your actual lifespan. Quitting smoking is believed to benefit your health at any age. If you want to quit, a smoking-cessation clinic or a public support line can help.
How it works
- This is a rough estimate, not a medical prediction. Time lost is calculated as 'total cigarettes x about 12 minutes each'. Total cigarettes = 'cigarettes per day x 365 x years smoking', then converted minutes to days to years (1 day = 1,440 min, 1 year = 365 days).
- The 'about 12 minutes per cigarette' figure is a statistical estimate derived from the average life-expectancy gap between smokers and non-smokers divided per cigarette. It is a rough guide and does not predict any individual's lifespan.
- Lifetime cigarette cost is optional. If you enter cigarettes per pack and price per pack, it is estimated as 'total cigarettes / pack size x price'; otherwise it is not calculated.
- The health impact of smoking depends on many factors beyond count and years, such as starting age, individual constitution, and lifestyle, so treat these numbers as a rough, for-fun reference only.
- Quitting smoking is believed to benefit health at any age. If you want to quit, a smoking-cessation clinic or a public support line can be a good option.
- This tool provides a rough statistical estimate only and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, prediction, or care. Consult a doctor or other professional for health decisions.
