How it works
- This tool estimates the "statutory inheritance share" under Japan's Civil Code. If there is a will, or the heirs all agree on a different division, the actual split may differ from these shares.
- Heirs rank in order: (1) children, (2) lineal ascendants (parents, then grandparents), and (3) siblings. If a higher-ranking heir exists, lower-ranking relatives do not inherit. A surviving spouse is always an heir.
- Spouse and children: 1/2 to the spouse and 1/2 shared by the children. Spouse and ascendants: 2/3 and 1/3. Spouse and siblings: 3/4 and 1/4. Each group's share is split equally among its members.
- With no spouse, the blood relatives of the applicable rank split the whole estate equally. With a spouse but no blood heirs, the spouse inherits everything.
- Children born outside marriage are treated as having the same share as other children (they were previously half, but the law was corrected).
- This tool does not cover special cases such as inheritance by representation (grandchildren, nieces or nephews inheriting in place of a deceased heir) or half-blood siblings (whose share is half that of full siblings). It is a general estimate only; for an exact treatment, consult a lawyer, judicial scrivener, or tax accountant.
