An approximate guide for a salaried employee (Kyokai Kenpo). Actual take-home varies with your municipality, age, dependents, deductions, and bonuses.

How it works

  • This tool is an approximate guide for a Japanese salaried employee (enrolled in Kyokai Kenpo health insurance). Actual take-home pay varies with your municipality, age, dependents, other deductions (life insurance, mortgage credit, etc.), and whether you receive bonuses.
  • For each salary, the employment income deduction (FY2020 onward) is subtracted to get employment income, then social insurance (employee share: health 5.0%, pension 9.15%, employment insurance 0.6%) is deducted. The standard monthly remuneration caps for health and pension are applied.
  • Income tax applies the quick tax table to taxable income after the ¥480,000 basic deduction, plus the 2.1% special reconstruction income tax. Resident tax uses a ¥430,000 basic deduction, a 10% income-based rate, and a ¥5,000 per-capita levy (standard).
  • Turning on the long-term care insurance premium (ages 40–64) adds 0.8% to the health insurance rate. Leave it off if you are under 40 or 65 and over.
  • Insurance rates and the standard monthly remuneration caps differ by prefecture, fiscal year, and insurer. The figures use standard rates close to the national average.
  • Personal deductions such as dependents and spouse deductions are not included. For a more detailed estimate, use it together with other take-home calculators.
  • This table is only a guide and does not guarantee exact take-home or tax amounts. Actual figures depend on your employer's payroll rules and your municipality's tax.
