How it works
- Maturity amount (after tax) = principal + after-tax interest, where after-tax interest = pre-tax interest − 20.315% withholding tax on the interest.
- Choose simple or yearly-compound interest. Simple interest = principal × annual rate × years; compound interest = principal × ((1 + annual rate)^years − 1). The term is the entered years plus months, summed in months and converted to years (months ÷ 12).
- The tax on interest is Japan's 20.315% withholding tax on deposit interest (15% income tax + 0.315% special reconstruction income tax + 5% resident tax). Turn off the tax option to see the pre-tax (tax-exempt equivalent) interest and amount.
- Interest and tax are floored to whole yen. Actual banks may differ by a few yen due to interim interest payments, rounding, and day-count conventions.
- Japanese banks typically use simple interest for terms under 3 years and half-year compounding for 3 years or more. This tool's compound option is yearly, so it differs slightly from half-year-compound products. Early-withdrawal rates and tax-exempt savings schemes are not modeled.
- This is an estimate. Confirm the actual rate, interest, and maturity value with your financial institution's product terms before depositing.
