How it works

  • An installment plan splits a credit card purchase into several monthly payments. Plans of 3 or more installments carry a fee (installment fee), and the more installments, the larger the total fee. Card issuers commonly charge no fee for 1 or 2 installments.
  • The fee uses the declining-balance method (roughly equal monthly principal, with the annual rate ÷ 12 applied to the outstanding balance). Under this method, the installment fee = purchase amount × annual rate(%) ÷ 100 ÷ 12 × (installments + 1) ÷ 2, and the fee per 100 = annual rate(%) × (installments + 1) ÷ 24.
  • The total fee's fractional unit is handled by your chosen rounding (round down, round half up, or round up). The total cost = purchase amount + fee, and the monthly payment is the total divided by the number of installments, with any remainder settled in the first payment.
  • Real card issuers differ in their annual rate, fee calculation, per-100 unit price, rounding, and billing cycle. Displayed amounts are estimates only—check your card issuer's terms and statement for the official fee and billing amount.
  • This is a simplified simulation that assumes no additional charges, early repayment, combined bonus payments, or late fees. More installments lower each payment but raise the total fee, so use installment plans within your means.
