How it works
- Supports the metric system—millimeter (mm), centimeter (cm), meter (m) and kilometer (km)—the imperial and nautical units inch (in), foot (ft), yard (yd), mile (mi) and nautical mile (M), the Japanese shakkanho units shaku, sun and ken, plus the light-year (ly) and angstrom (Å).
- The base unit for conversion is the meter (m). Your input is first converted to meters, then divided back by each unit's defined conversion factor to compute the value in every unit.
- To use it, type the number you want to convert in the field above and choose its unit from the dropdown. The table below shows the converted value in all units, including the one you selected, at the same time.
- Conversions use exact definition values (e.g. 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 mile = 1609.344 m, 1 nautical mile = 1852 m, 1 shaku = 10/33 m, 1 ken = 6 shaku). The light-year is based on the Julian year (365.25 days) and the speed of light.
- Very large or very small numbers are shown in exponential notation; otherwise values are displayed to roughly six decimal places. Displayed values are rounded approximations, so mind the remainder for exact calculations.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the length converter work?
- It first converts your value into meters (the base unit), then divides by each unit's defined factor to fill in every unit at once. It uses exact definitions such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, and 1 mile = 1609.344 m.
- How many meters are in one nautical mile versus one regular mile?
- One nautical mile (M) is defined as exactly 1852 m, while one statute mile (mi) is 1609.344 m. The nautical mile is used for maritime and aviation distances, so the two are not interchangeable.
- Can it handle very large or very small units like light-years or angstroms?
- Yes. Light-years (ly) are based on the Julian year of 365.25 days and the speed of light, and angstroms (Å) are supported too. Extremely large or small results are shown in exponential notation, with other values rounded to about six decimal places.
