Wooden Box Board Dimension Calculator
Enter the outer dimensions (width, depth, height) and board thickness of a wooden box to calculate the board sizes and counts for all 6 faces (bottom, lid, front/back, sides), plus the total board area and the inner size and volume.

Input
Assuming the common construction where the left and right side panels enclose the front and back panels, this tool calculates the dimensions and quantity of boards for all 6 faces. The figures are design estimates only; when cutting, allow separately for the saw kerf and finishing margins.
Result
Total board area (boards required)
2,028cm²
Total boards:5 boards
Total board area
2,028 cm²
Inner size (W×D×H)
276×176×138 mm
Inner volume
approx. 6.7 L
Board dimensions and quantities to cut
| Board name | Size (mm) | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| Front & back panels | 300 × 150 | 2 boards |
| Side panels | 176 × 150 | 2 boards |
| Bottom panel | 300 × 200 | 1 board |
* Calculated as front/back = W×H, sides = (D−2t)×H, bottom/lid = W×D. The dimensions change if the construction differs.
How it works
- Enter the outer dimensions (width W, depth D, height H) and board thickness t of the box, and the tool calculates the dimensions and quantities of the bottom, lid, front/back, and side panels. Toggle the switches to include or exclude the bottom and lid.
- It assumes the common construction in which the left and right side panels enclose the front and back panels. Specifically, the board sizes are calculated as front/back = W×H, sides = (D−2t)×H, and bottom/lid = W×D.
- The total board area is the sum of each board's area multiplied by its quantity. Use it as a guide for how much board material to prepare.
- The dimensions shown are design estimates only. When you actually cut the boards, allow separately for the saw kerf and the stock removed during finishing.
- The required board sizes vary with the joinery method, such as nailing, screwing, gluing, or joints (miter joints, rabbet joints, and so on). Adjust while checking the finished result.
- If the board is so thick relative to the depth that the side panel width becomes 0 or less, review the outer dimensions or the board thickness.
