How it works
- Exit rate is calculated as "exits on a page ÷ page views (PV) of that page × 100". An exit is a time the page was the last one viewed in a session.
- Exit rate and bounce rate are often confused but mean different things. Bounce rate is the share of sessions where only the first page was viewed before leaving, so it always applies to the first page of a session. Exit rate, on the other hand, measures the share of times a page was the last one viewed, no matter where it fell in the session.
- A high exit rate is not always a problem. On pages like a purchase confirmation or a contact-completed page, it is natural for visitors to achieve their goal and leave there.
- When looking for improvements, it is most effective to focus on the exit rate of pages where you still want users to continue, such as a product list or a step in a form.
- The continuation rate (100% − exit rate) is a rough measure of the share of visits that moved on to another page. It can serve as an indicator of how well visitors are browsing within your site.
- The exits and PV you enter are only used for calculation on your device; they are not sent or stored anywhere, so you can test values with peace of mind.
