How it works
- Stolen base success rate is calculated as stolen bases divided by (stolen bases plus caught stealing). Caught stealing counts the times a runner was thrown out attempting a steal.
- The denominator, total attempts, is stolen bases plus caught stealing, representing every time a steal was tried.
- Following traditional baseball convention, the rate is shown both as a percentage and in three-decimal notation (for example, .857).
- The break-even point for stealing is generally cited at around 70%. Below that level, the cost of outs from getting caught tends to outweigh the added scoring chances.
- Even a high success rate contributes little if the number of steals is small. It is best evaluated alongside the number of attempts.
- Enter stolen bases and caught stealing as whole numbers of 0 or greater. The rate cannot be calculated when the total is 0.
