How it works
- Supported units include the metric system (milligram (mg), gram (g), kilogram (kg), tonne (t)), the avoirdupois system (ounce (oz), pound (lb), stone (st), carat (ct)), and traditional Japanese units (monme, kin, kan).
- Conversions use the kilogram (kg) as the base unit. Each value is first converted to kilograms and then to the target unit, so every combination gives a consistent result.
- The main factors are defined values: 1 pound = 453.59237 g, 1 ounce = 28.3495 g, 1 stone = 6.35029 kg, 1 carat = 0.2 g, 1 monme = 3.75 g, 1 kin = 600 g, 1 kan = 3.75 kg.
- To use it, enter the number you want to convert and choose its unit from the dropdown. The conversion table updates automatically for every unit, and the row of the selected unit is highlighted.
- Very large or very small results are shown in exponential notation. Displayed values are approximate, so round any remaining fractions as appropriate for your use case.
- One tonne is treated as a metric ton (1000 kg). Note that the avoirdupois ton (long ton / short ton) has a different value.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the weight (mass) converter work?
- It uses the kilogram (kg) as the base unit, converting your value into kg first and then out to every other unit. Exact definitions are used, such as 1 pound = 453.59237 g and 1 ounce = 28.3495 g.
- Which ton does this tool use — metric, long, or short?
- It treats 1 ton as a metric ton (tonne), exactly 1000 kg. That differs from the imperial long ton (about 1016 kg) and the US short ton (about 907 kg), so be careful when a source uses those.
- How many pounds are in a stone, and what is a carat here?
- One stone (st) is 6.35029 kg, which is 14 pounds, a unit still common for body weight in the UK. One carat (ct) is defined as 0.2 g and is used for gemstones.
