- Each item (electricity, city gas, LP gas, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and water) is multiplied by its CO2 emission factor and summed to give the total emissions in kg-CO2. Leave items you do not use blank.
- The default emission factors used (approximate, representative values) are: electricity = 0.45 kg-CO2/kWh (default, adjustable), city gas = 2.23 kg-CO2/m³, LP gas = 6.0 kg-CO2/m³, gasoline = 2.32 kg-CO2/L, kerosene = 2.49 kg-CO2/L, and diesel = 2.58 kg-CO2/L.
- Emission factors vary by country, region, utility, and electricity mix. The electricity factor defaults to a common average (roughly 0.43–0.47 kg-CO2/kWh) but can be changed to match your own value.
- Tap water is estimated at about 0.36 kg-CO2/m³, reflecting the electricity used for treatment and distribution; this figure also differs by region and provider.
- The total CO2 is divided by the annual CO2 absorption of one cedar tree (about 14 kg-CO2 per tree per year, a representative value) to estimate how many trees' annual absorption it corresponds to.
- All figures are estimates based on general, representative values. Actual emissions depend on usage, region, and your provider's specific factors, so use the results as a rough guide.
