The birth star (the center of that year's plate) is found by summing the digits of the year down to a single digit and subtracting from 11. For example, 2024 gives 2+0+2+4=8 and 11−8=3, which is the Three Jade Wood Star. Because the Nine Star year and month change at Risshun and each month's solar term, note that those born from January to Setsubun, or around the start of a month before the solar term, fall into the previous division.

How it works

  • Enter a year to display that year's plate on a 3×3 grid. The star in the center square (the central palace) is that year's birth star. Choose a month to display the month plate at the same time.
  • The birth star (the center of the year plate) is found by summing the digits of the year down to a single digit, then subtracting that number from 11. For example, 2024 gives 2+0+2+4=8 and 11−8=3, the Three Jade Wood Star.
  • The eight directions (southeast, south, southwest, east, west, northeast, north, northwest) hold the nine stars obtained by shifting the Later Heaven bagua (the reference layout) to match the center star. It shows the basics of how to read the plate at a glance.
  • In Nine Star Ki, the year turns over at Risshun (start of spring). People born between January 1 and Setsubun (around February 3) belong to the previous year's star, so be careful about which year you enter.
  • The month plate's center and the month boundaries switch at each month's solar term (setsu-iri). This tool calculates by calendar month as a guide, so the division may shift near the start of a month around the solar term.
  • The five elements and readings shown are general guides based on common Nine Star Ki. Judgments about lucky and unlucky directions differ by school, so please also consult specialized references for details.
