How it works
- Choose a date and time, and the tool automatically shows the two-hour period (earthly branch) that time falls in and the corresponding time nine-star (time chart).
- A day is divided into two-hour periods by the twelve earthly branches, starting from the Rat hour (about 11 PM to 1 AM), and each period is assigned one nine-star. This tool determines which period the chosen time belongs to and calculates from there.
- The time chart sets the origin star placed at the Rat hour from that day's earthly branch; on Yang-cycle days the stars advance in order through each period, and on Yin-cycle days they move backward, arranging a nine-star for each period.
- The switch between the Yang and Yin cycles is originally based on Japanese calendar divisions bounded by the winter and summer solstices, but this tool uses a simplified estimate derived from the day's earthly branch.
- The day nine-star is shown for reference as well, but because the origin and the way stars advance can differ between schools, please treat the result as a guide.
- In some schools the 11 PM hour is treated as the next day in that day's calendar. For times around the date boundary, please check according to the calendar system you use.
