How it works
- Dynamic viscosity (absolute viscosity) measures a fluid's resistance to flow, with the SI unit being the pascal-second (Pa·s). This tool converts dynamic (absolute) viscosity, not kinematic viscosity (m²/s).
- In the CGS system, one poise (P) equals 0.1 Pa·s and one centipoise (cP) equals 0.001 Pa·s = 1 mPa·s. The viscosity of water at room temperature is roughly 1 mPa·s (1 cP).
- The kilogram-force second per square meter (kgf·s/m²) is the gravitational-system unit of viscosity; using standard gravity 9.80665, 1 kgf·s/m² = 9.80665 Pa·s.
- Choose a value and input unit to display the conversion to every supported unit in the table, with the conversion to the base unit, the pascal-second (Pa·s), shown prominently.
- When values are extremely large or small, they are shown in exponential notation (e.g. 1.2345e+15) for readability.
- Factors are computed from exact defined values, but note that in practice the viscosity itself changes with conditions such as measurement temperature.
