How it works
- US and Imperial (UK) gallons and pints have different volumes. A US gallon is about 3.785 L while an Imperial gallon is about 4.546 L — roughly 20% larger — so always check which system a recipe or product label uses.
- Every unit is converted relative to the liter, using the internationally fixed exact definitions: 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L.
- A US pint is about 0.473 L and a UK pint is about 0.568 L. A pint of beer in a pub is usually served to the UK standard (about 568 mL), making it larger than a US pint (about 473 mL).
- Fluid ounces also differ: about 29.57 mL in the US system and about 28.41 mL in the UK system. The US divides a gallon into 128 fl oz, while the UK divides it into 160 fl oz.
